Diagnostics
Patients with impaired hearing at our clinic always have ear and nose endoscopic examination.
Besides they are recommended to take such examinations as audiometry and impedancemetry.
Audiometry exam demonstrates the degree of decreased hearing at certain frequencies. This method is not very suitable for children younger than 8-9 y.o. During the test procedure the patient himself/herself signals to the researcher, when the sound in the earphones becomes audible. Small children may just not be enough attentive or simply misunderstand the requirements.
Impedancemetry is a measurement of tympanic membrane compliance. The method is absolutely objective and does not depend on the child’s reaction. It helps to determine for sure if there is fluid behind tympanic membrane or not.
Treatment
There are 3 tasks that physician needs to complete in the course of middle ear treatment:
- Repair the drainage through eustachian tube
- Infection treatment
- Reconstruct the integrity of the tympanic membrane (after perforation).
These tasks are resolved based on every particular case either by means of medications or surgical treatment! Appropriate treatment protocol can be accepted only during personal consultation with a specialist. This is the chance to demonstrate true life wisdom and not to be enticed with the diagnosis and treatment plan suggested at the pharmacy.
